About this deal

Emily Austin's narration is so fundamentally kind that you can feel the warmth coming off each page.

How do you think her parent’s—and, in particular, her dad’s—reactions to her behavior as a child affected her as she grew up?You may not laugh out loud at some of the humour, but there are parts where you might crack a small smile, such as when Gilda learns that the password to the church’s computer is simply the word, wait for it, “password. Sometimes she is in a disassociative state where she feels she is floating and observing herself below and there are memory gaps.

Telef. I would be lying if I said I loved this book but I did like Gilda as a character and I enjoyed going on her journey with her.I can understand the reasoning: the book is written from the perspective of someone with a fragmented mind. For fans of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Halle Butler, this is a darkly funny, surprisingly tender, and weirdly charming coming-of-age novel about a young woman with so much anxiety she'd rather lie than risk hurting anyone's feelings. While the narrator is anxious beyond measure, the prose is self-assured - brisk and effortless, moving through time and space with ease. Every seemingly mundane action Gilda makes has to be mentioned, so that we have many lines such as these: I drink, I get up, I put the cup on the counter, I move my hand, I walk, I sit, I blink, I look down/up. A counterargument to this could be that Gilda is too wrapped up in her own head to observe her surroundings, but, what about My Year of Rest and Relaxation?

If you are fixated on death or on the purpose of your life, there is some relief offered to you by the Catholic Church and by most religions.Giuseppe could have been funny but Austin is too heavy-handed, and the result is an unfunny caricature. This book is all about the thought of death being the main form of anxiety for Gilda and the thought of this consumes her everyday and there is always something leading her back to this thought, whether it be taking a job from a dead lady or witnessing a house fire she will constantly be thinking about death.

It’s impossible not to root for her as she navigates love, religion, mental health and everything in between. As a queer woman whose brain can be a terrifying place, I devoured this novel about a panic-ridden lesbian who hides her sexuality to work at a Catholic Church. This is my favorite kind of story, one about how hard it can be to be alive in an on-fire world with a semi nonfunctioning brain, but also about how beautiful life is, how wonderful people are. She lost her job because she frequently slept in and missed her shifts or the effort of getting up was more than she could manage. In this “fun, page-turner of a novel” (Sarah Haywood, New York Times bestselling author) that’s perfect for fans of Mostly Dead Things and Goodbye, Vitamin, a morbidly anxious young woman stumbles into a job as a receptionist at a Catholic church and soon finds herself obsessed with her predecessor’s mysterious death. Eleanor asks her questions about Gilda, and Gilda become suspicious that these are phishing questions. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. She simply examines the superficiality of religion to a degree from the perspective of an atheist, even if it turns out that her main character does receive some form of help from attending a church as part of her job. Through the inner dialogue of Gilda, our painfully human heroine, Austin connects us with the best and worst parts of being a person while reminding us that even our darkest moments can lead to extraordinary revelations.
